Oh no, someone might think I have a thing for pancakes

This time last year my friend Ioana and I were cooking for a TV show called CSID, broadcasted on ProTV. While I was cooking spicy tofu cakes, she made the fluffiest and the most delicious pancakes in the world, topping them with a mixture of cream cheese, chocolate and bananas. While still waiting for a remake of those incredibly delicious pancakes, I made these ones yesterday and one of them happened to have that balloon shape like we see in cartoons or in comics. So this is how you make a pancake say "Hi!".

I always like to add different ingredients and I'm thinking that next time I make some, it would be interesting to add green tea and some dark chocolate drops. I just love the green tea flavour although it took me a while to get used to it and I remember very well how I would always make a wry face whenever one of my friends would mention he's drinking unsweetened green tea.

I am proud to say that for the last couple of years not only I had drunk a respectable amount of green tea, but today I make the same wry face when someone's thinking about adding sugar to their tea. I learned how many times healthy foods might not taste better in the beginning since we are used to artificial flavours. Nowadays I'm tasting raw vegetables I would not even consider trying a couple of years ago.

Short long story about granola, electric stove and morning coffee

One of my friends (who happens to know plenty of things about electricity) told me to buy an electric oven. I almost immediately refused the idea. In my mind, a traditional oven was the best choice. However, after hearing how passionate bakers were talking about how electric stove was their best investment, I'm having second thoughts about this. After all, the cakes, the cookies, the home made bread, they all have to be close to perfection. What's your opinion on this one? Traditional stove or electric oven?

You cannot see it in these photos, but I painted my kitchen in a very nice dark blue. It's not finished yet since finally moving into your home takes more than you'd initially hope and daydream. Friends are pleased with it (despite of the old furniture still being there) but I want them crazy in love with something which will end up looking like a coffee house or a small cozy bakery store. More on that soon. Photos with every step is mandatory. I have been terribly busy lately. With the winter and every day work (and without a functional oven), preparing great foods was a real challenge. I was left with barely any spare time on my hands and I turned into eating cereals on a daily basis. I am not, however, a big fan of processed food. What's even worse is that I bought all the wrong things for eating lunch at work. For me, lunch should be brunch with a twist, just something extra which makes it close to a lunch. If you have waffles in the morning, add some avocado at lunch and some boiled egg and turn it into a personalized waflle serving. Or prepare yourself a simple eggplant tortilla which you can make in 10 minutes and add a yogurt dressing with fresh mint and lime. This is something you can also have in the morning and it's delicious.

Before you start thinking I put the wrong title for this article, I will say (once again) how my favourite breakfast is home made granola. I would never ever trade this for the cereals you find in stores. You already know the recipe I made several times so I want to share with you this granola recipe which I found on the great Orangette blog:

She described it as being an amazing mixture so I will have to try it. There are few things which taste better in the morning than home made granola. And you know I could go on and on about that but I just can't resist mentioning the heart I accidentally captured in my cup of coffee one morning this week. There is, indeed, something beautiful in every day. And it starts with the morning.

Mission completed: simple breakfast and a lemon tree

Yes, my dears, I planted lemon seeds yesterday and rosemary! I don't care about the snow outside and as some of you may notice, there is barely any snow left. For those in Bucharest, I have a question: does anyone know where I could find some really great vintage furniture? I found some online stores, but with very big prices (it's understandable because most of the pieces were about 100 years old). I would like to find some sort of place with decent prices. I'd love to find some high chairs for my buffet, a living room small table and some interesting chairs for the living room as well. Thanks in advance.

First thing I noticed this morning when I looked outside the window: it was snowing! And yesterday I was just talking about that spring which should be here soon. Oh well, no surprise, for the last few years, snow did arrive this late.

I'm going outside now to buy some chocolate and some fruits. Plans for today: paint something for the new frame and plant a lemon tree.

And I also wanted to let you know that I made a new plan: 1.000 likes by the end of May. If I didn't mention it before, the Facebook page is this one here. Sharing is more than appreciated.

In other news, the moment new oven comes in, I'm thinking biscotti. We will have to wait a little more, probably a month, but I know the kitchen will turn into a real bakery once it's done.

As long as I remember,my grandmother would always advice me to eat a spoon of honey every morning. Then I remember how mum used to give me the same advice. Growing up, I dismissed most of these pieces of advice.

It took me almost 23 years to understand how what I was eating was far from being healthy. Giving up any processed food is still not a completed resolution and I realized you need time and a very well organized schedule in order to make sure you have something to eat when you're hungry and you can avoid buying processed food because you don't have an option.

Plans for spring: making a small garden in my new balcony. I am sure it would a great project and truly relaxing to spend time surrounded by so many plants. What's your plan for this spring?

I am, of course, kidding when it comes about postponing good mood and eating chocolate muffins instead. As we all know, happiness is a journey and not a destination so there is no better moment for enjoying everything but present time.

Once again, I have to appologise for not that great light, but I posted down below how morning light looks like when I'm having breakfast. However, today I had a lazy morning so I promise great photos tomorrow. Catching up, lovelies! I wish you all an extraordinary day and take care of your health by not skipping breakfast.

7 am. But it's okay, spring will be here in no time (ok, in one month and a bit, but that, my friends, is extraordinarily good news).

My birthday is in May, if anyone interested into surprising me with one of these lovelies down below. One thing I miss about travelling abroad is the possibility of buying this sort of beauties at more than reasonable prices. I found these on Anthropologie, a place where they usually have the most stunning dinnerware.

I am quite excited about a new series of breakfast recipes and to that adds the feeling that spring will soon be here. I have new plans for planting spices on the balcony and some cherry tomatoes and green salad as well. If you can use any space in your home as a small garden, do it. It's just incredible to be surrounded by a green splendour. It completely changes your mood and positively influences your life.

The book Healthy Breakfast Recipes is also on my wishlist but since they don't ship to Romania (yes, we are privileged), I will have to wait a while. It's quite inspiring (partially disappointing) to see that this sort of cooking projects can turn into books. I've been writing several publishing houses about this possibility, but so far I got no asnwer. I'm thinking in 5 years time the editorial market will be more resourceful and bloggers in different fields will benefit from the chance of publishing their own books.

For those interested in the recipe, leave a comment and I will reply writing the recipe. I already made this chocolate wonder (no cocoa added, just dark chocolate, pistachio and white chocolate) twice and I had the greatest feedback (even a marriage proposal which, of course, I could not accept but I guess it's true what they say, the way through a man's heart is through his stomach).

It's very easy to make and although my German knowledge is as tiny this brownie portion, I managed to translate the recipe and get it right. When the new oven is in the house, new cakes will flavor the kitchen and make my neighbors envious (but my friends happy). I showed you here the greatest book for cakes in the whole while world. Again, if you are interested in this book, I will write you the title (it's in German, but they show you every step so it's all very easy with simple ingredients and amazing results).

Before getting into all this breakfast photographing/plates and cups hunting I was more interested in kitchen appliances (who wouldn't be when you can buy something like this?). But during one visit, I found some of the greatest plates and I completely turned into a maniac and asked for my grandma's permission to search through all the almost 200 plates. One of my lucky findings is this blue darling right here. Others you will see in future shots.

My not so updated post is caused by my not that perfect health from the last weeks. I've been prescribed a treatment and between work and going to bed at 10.30 I will have to find some ideas for a breakfast which also respects my strict diet because I cannot eat a lot of foods anymore, hopefully just during this treatment.

I will now take advantage of the still sunny day to go out at the pharmacy and buy some more pills. I wish you all good health and still keep on having breakfast in the morning. :)

And what's that kettle doing there? Ah, that's where the tea happens every morning. And probably very late tomorrow. You know how things go around here, if it's Saturday or Sunday, it's not breakfast, it's brunch.

How not to make a tomato soup

No suprise, I'm having the regular cereals. It's the laziness of the new year beginning but I promise I will eat avocado tomorrow morning. Rather than posting yet another bowl of cereals, I wanted to tell you how last night I went out with some friends to have some hot soup. Yes, in order to heal our ...tooth aches. And almost half an hour later, there it was, the ~~marvelous~~ what we thought and hoped to be a great soup: boiled ketchup, my friends. Lesson learned: don't go to a pizza restaurant and ask for tomato soup. They will just put the pizza topping in a bowl and serve it to you. But it's okay, they put parsley on top.

And, of course, once your family gets used to whatever you're baking and they realize it's not dangerous for them to eat what you cook, they'll ask you to "make that cake again, will you?". Sunt în plin proces de mutare şi o să mai dureze câteva săptămâni toată această nebunie (pe care, de altfel, o ador, dar care mă face să mă plimb între două case). Îmi plac dimineţile în care apare, ca o supriză plăcută, şi nişte ciocolată. Mai ales că te poţi bucura în tihnă de o porţie serioasă de calorii, doar ziua e abia la început. În ultima vreme nu prea am mai avut timp să experimentez în bucătărie, dar gândul la un chocolate fudge perfect nu m-a părăsit niciodată. Până să reuşesc să mă organizez ceva mai bine, o felie de tort cu ciocolată mă face să mai uit de timpul liber inexistent. Are şi dezorganizarea, se pare, părţile ei bune. De ciocolată.

Acum spune-mi tu despre cea mai recentă "întâlnire" cu ciocolata.

În foarte multe dimineţi de weekend am mare poftă de aşa ceva, de nişte tagliatelle cu sos de roşii care să îţi trezească la viaţă papilele gustative printr-o aromă fierbinte de chilli. De multe alte ori aleg o omletă cu legume sau o tortilla spaniolă, oricum o reţetă simplă. E ca şi cum până pe la ora 11 îmi adun suficiente forţe ca să mă apropii cu stoicism de cuptor sau de aragaz.

Până când o să am şi mai mult timp la dispoziţie sâmbăta şi duminica, o să mă bazez pe astfel de reţete care se pregătesc cât ai spune... "mi-e cam lene". Aşa a fost şi cu aceste tagliatelle gata în doar 4 minute (ne plac pastele care au timpul de fierbere incredibil de redus). E drept că sosul îţi ia cam 15 minute, în funcţie de cât de mult vrei să fie gătite roşiile (şi, din fericire, proprietăţile nutritive ale roşiilor se accentuează atunci când le găteşti).

Îmi place la nebunie să adaug usturoi într-un astfel de sos. Îl zdrobeşti fără milă la început, îL adaugi în tigaia în care ai pus deja ulei de măsline şi îl laşi un pic înainte să adaugi roşiile, doar cât să îi întărâţi puţin aromele. Poţi să adaugi orice alte legume care se călesc ultra-rapid sau poţi să îl prepari simplu, doar cu roşii, fără să te zgârceşti la condimente.

Pătrunjelul poate fi adăugat la sfârşit, dar numai dacă îţi place şi nu îl pescuiai cu lingura din mâncare atunci când erai mic.

Şi dacă tot suntem între prieteni, care e cel mai leneş mic dejun de care ai avut parte vreodată?

Orice fel de mancare capata un gust mai bun atunci cand nu mananci singur. E un fapt cunoscut care ar trebui aplicat cel putin o data pe zi. Cu Ioana obisnuiesc sa iau brunchul la Van Gogh duminica. Seria interviurilor la mic dejun incepe, asadar, cu ea. Daca o intrebi cu ce se ocupa, o sa fie destul de modesta. Nu o sa-ti spuna, de exemplu, ca munca ei implica nenumarate activitati si ca e un organizator de evenimente extraordinar.

I-am luat interviul intr-o astfel de duminica, atunci cand ne-am hotarat sa ne intalnim din nou pentru o portie delicioasa de musli, un lemon cheesecake si o omleta care Ioanei ii place foarte mult.

Inspiratie, mic dejun si dimineti de toamna ceva mai intunecate

S-a terminat cu diminetile de vara tarzii si proaspete, cu soarele care ne anunta inca de la 6 ca aveam inainte o zi intreaga. Octombrie a venit cu dimineti mohorate, cu un frig care ma tine inca o jumatate de ora in pat si cu dorinta puternica de a inventa o metoda prin care cafeaua sa apara in mod miraculos chiar langa pat in fiecare dimineata. Imi dau seama acum ca un filtru langa pat in loc de ceasul cu alarma ar fi mult mai potrivit.

In orice caz, chiar daca toamna trezeste in multi dintre noi sentimente mai nesuferite, exista si o portie mare de inspiratie in fiecare zi din luna octombrie. Ceaiurile din zori capata alta savoare, prajiturile mancate in pat cu o revista in brate au parca un gust mult mai bun si orice moment petrecut inauntru nu mai este atat de lenes ca acele dupa-amiezi de august in care ne ascundeam de caldura si ravneam la racoarea serii. Asa-i ca v-am facut deja sa va placa mai mult luna aceasta?

Si pentru ca tot vorbim de inspiratie, va recomand astazi revista Kinfolk, cu niste articole cat se poate de potrivite pentru aceasta perioada. Blogul Mic dejun va fi, incepand de astazi, scris in limba romana si va trece prin mai multe schimbari care sper ca vor fi pe placul vostru.

Missed the pancakes? I know I did. With the fair, the job and trying to finish the documentation for the new home, there seems to be little time left for a longer morning. But as you already know, I'm still having breakfast every morning. And yes, I'm sometimes

skipping lunches so my colleagues at work might believe I don't eat at all. But I tell you, whatever the problems you're struggling with, breakfast just makes your life better. So first edition of Mic dejun de Bucuresti Food Fair took place yesterday and it turned out to be a pretty good event. Five rooms, filled with the sweet perfume of muffins, tarts, pancakes, pies and all sorts of cookies and cakes. Talented participants and great people who came and tasted a delicious breakfast. I wake up at 6 each morning. When I'm lucky and less lazy, I manage to also photograph my breakfast before eating it. These weeks I'm dealing with tons of work, personal projects and some administrative stuff which take almost every hour of my free (whatever that is) time. I'm not complaining about it, but I can't deny I wish I found a more efficient way of getting all these things accomplished. I am a big fan of ginger iced tea or of ginger chocolate or ginger curd, ginger muffins, ginger cereals. Yes, you may call me Ginger from now on. I decided to make ginger iced tea at least once a week since I make an entire teapot every time. And all you have to do is to make some green tea, add fresh ginger, honey and some lemon juice and the ice, before you serve it. It's one of my favourite summer drinks. And in the cereal bowl we have a delicious mixture of oat and rye flakes, dry ginger, goji berries,
almonds, hazelnuts and almond milk. You cannot see all of them, but they are there. I gave up buying processed cereals a year and a half ago and it's not only the healthiest musli blend, but it's so much more fun to make your own favourite mixture. Just think about the multitude of seeds or fruits you can add! Best part is that you don't have to add sugar. For instance, the raisins or the dried sweet fruits will do the trick. Just make sure they don't contain added sugar (they generally don't but reading the labels is a good habit).

I've become that sort of person who cannot wait to wake up in the morning and have breakfast!

This is, let's say, a much better version of a banana bread. And it's easier to make it. So this is what you need for this recipe.

220 g white flour (I used pastry flour)

175 g brown sugar

3 eggs

75 g hazelnuts (roasted in a pan, than ground)

100 g black chocolate (I used the 55% cocoa chocolate)

1 ripe banana

1 tbsp vanilla essence

Mix together the sugar, the eggs and the flour. Add the vanilla and the ground hazelnuts. Add the banana you ripped into approximately 1cm pieces and the chocolate pieces. Carefully mix with a spoon. Pour the mixture in the form and leave it in the oven for an hour. Don't forget to use a baking sheet. That's all! :)

Hello again, dear friends!

How was your weekend so far? Mine had only one objective: to make all my friends gain a couple more pounds these two days. While yesterday I made these incredibly tasty ginger pinneaple muffins, today I put in the oven a banana cake (fingers crossed for that, I added a little more flour than it was in the original recipe). So below you have the recipe and more photos!
So for these amazing muffins you need 280 g white flour, 1 baking powder packet, 80 g dried fruits (I used ginger and pineapple), 50 g hazelnuts, 50 g white chocolate, 2 eggs, 200 ml buttermilk, 100 ml vegetal oil and 120 g brown sugar (280 g făină de grâu, 1 plic praf de copt, 80 g fructe confiate, 50 g alune de pădure, 50 g ciocolată albă, 2 ouă, 200 ml lapte bătut, 100 ml ulei vegetal and 120 g zahăr brun). But in fact I changed the original recipe and used only 20 ml olive oil and they turned out just fine. 100 ml oil seemed way too much.

Mix the baking powder with the flour, add the fruits, the chopped hazelnuts (not too small), the white chocolate and the sugar. Separately, mix the eggs, the oil and buttermilk. Combine the two mixtures into one and mix again. Pour the mixture into the muffin tray (you need a muffin tray or aluminium muffin forms, the mixture softens the paper forms) and put them in the oven for 20-25 minutes. There you have them. They're even more delicious the next day. Eat them with yogurth or buttermilk. You will love them.

And did I tell you about the amazing pomegranate and Egyption mint bio tea? Investigations have been made and next year they open a store in Bucharest. It's the most delicious tea I tried (mind you, I had oceans of tea by this age) and it has no artificial flavour.

Now I'm actually managing to take photos even at 6.30 in the morning because I sometimes wake up at 6. I'm still in search of a perfect header and other structure alterations are to be made. But each thing has a time of its own. Good news is that there will be no more big pauses when it comes about posting. It requires more promotion and soon you will be seeing other links on the page with one of my favourite cooking or food photography pages. Good news, everyone, I fixed my camera (or my camera fixed itself, better said). I used this recipe here that I found on Lily in The Kitchen blog. I found it quite easy for a beginner like me but it must be also thanks to the fact that Lily's recipe was very well explained and also illustrated. I'm a terrible mum for this blog since I'm feeding it photos only once in a while. No excuses though because they wouldn't post more photos instead, would they? :) Continue reading...
So here we have homemade hummus, oven baked marrows, corn flakes, low fat milk, hot chocolate cream and yes, coffee.

This is a very healthy breakfast except for the cup of chocolate. I'm currently on a detox diet so my breakfasts are limited to a few goodies: almonds, apples, dried plums, green tea, blueberries, whole grain cereals and, of course, a cup of lemon water every morning. I let you know how that goes, but that means no more pancakes for a while, no chocolate, no granola, no eggs. But I'm thinking about some lovely toasties, we'll see.

I've also bought the most delicious bread, it's 100% bio, from Alnatura, it's made only of rye grits and it's just the one below:

I find all sorts of healthy stuff (and also natural cosmetics) in the DM stores, and in Bucharest you can find one on Bratianu boulevard, near Unirii. For buying oat or rye flakes, I recommend the regular Plafar, you find the same product, only three times cheaper.

Not another cheese pie breakfast!

Although yesterday was not a good day for science (or work for that matters), it was for sure a good day for baking bread...
So this lovely brunch you're seeing here is made of homemade bread and homemade guacamole as well.

This morning (mind you it's 8.48 am) I had a pretty similar breakfast and I am still at home working on some translation before rushing to work where I'll have to write some more. It's going to be a crazy day with meetings and new tasks, but it's thrilling.

So not a lot of chit-chat going on today just because I have a lot of work to do. But because it's the weekend, I did find the time to make way too many pancakes in the morning. They were, of course, delicious and I ate them thinking how would I manage to spend this day without making some more. I guess pancakes are now the newest guilty pleasure after cheese pies, but nothing will ever compete with chocolate.

So I'm a big fan of cheese pies because somehow they remind me of those my grandmother used to make which were, of course, so much tastier. What you see in the photo is actually a traditionally Romanian cheese pie and yes, I know you cannot see the cheese in it, but it's there, take my word on it.

You know how lots of people are in search of their perfect favourite dish? Well, I'm currently searching for the perfect delicious cheese pie. I'm thinking that once I get some free time on my hands I should definitely try and make one. This weekend I plan on making bread for the first time. I already bought bio integral flour (flour that contains all the grain parts), grounds, flax seeds and caraway seeds (which I love especially in the biscuits). So as some of you might have noticed, I sometimes post my breakfast at night because in the morning before going to work I only have time for just taking photos of the breakfast before eating it. I also wanted to show you the shelf with the plates. Bad quality of the photo due to the neon light from the always dark kitchen.

But that's pretty much all for today, I'm running late with some illustrations I have to finish by tomorrow morning so I go back to work now but not before letting you know that tomorrow, because it's Friday, it's pancakes morning!

So I've pretty much decided to be more blog friendly and write a little bit more about what I'm eating. This implies talking about favourite dishes or favourite food I shop in the stores. One thing you should know about me is that...

I've always been une petite grande gourmande and so I enjoy shopping for food more than shopping for clothes or shoes. So today after leaving work I've decided to finally try the new Vitalis cereals which come in the big pack and they're supposed to be a mix between crunchy chocolate filled cereals and some sort of the good ol' Vitalis. I've been postponing this 'acquisition' with my dieting and all, but today I thought I might as well enjoy them as I once was a fan of the banana chocolate cereals. The minute I opened the bag I could smell the artificial flavour. The taste was not that great either. And they were also quite expensive but they came with a pink hippo packback.

So meet Pippo the Hippo:

I don't know if buying only simple oat flakes altered my taste in the good direction but I strongly hope it did because I will definitely keep on preparing my own granola whenever I'm in the mood for some sweet healthy cereals but healthier and with not so many calories (470 calories/100g is a lot for cereals!).

Well then, if you insist, I will tell you that yesterday we've been filming for the PRO TV show "Ce se întâmplă, doctore?". Lovely Ioana from Ruffles for Breakfast was very sweet to 'borrow' me her kitchen for the afternoon and also to help make a delicious breakfast. So I made some thai tofu spicy cakes and Ioana made the most delicious fluffy pancakes I've ever eaten. You can watch the show next Saturday or in two weeks time, I will let you know.
